Hey, welcome to Yugen Adventure! I’m Michelle, founder of this little slice of the universe. Since you’re here, I’d love to take this opportunity to fill you in on what we’re all about.
Yugen Adventure was born out of my search to find a kayak that could fit into my “shoebox sized” apartment. While traveling through Scandinavia, a friend introduced me to Oru Kayak for the first time. It was love at first sight; I simply had to have one. As an engineer, I was able to fully appreciate the elegant solution and beautiful design Oru had come up with. I had found what I'd been searching for!
Through Yugen Adventure, I now get to share these amazing kayaks with other outdoor enthusiasts who are searching for a similar solution. Helping them get back out into nature and connect with the water more easily than ever before.
Why “Yugen” Adventure?
Good question! Yugen is an important concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics. The exact translation of the word depends on the context, although one popular interpretation is “An awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep and powerful for words.” Yugen is however not an allusion to another world. It is about this world, this experience…
“To watch the sun sink behind a flower clad hill. To wander on in a huge forest without thought of return. To stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands. To contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds. And, subtle shadows of bamboo on bamboo.”

When first discovering the concept of Yugen, it immediately resonated with me at a deep level. I was then once again reminded of the concept, when hopping into an Oru Kayak for the first time in Norway and setting off on an adventure down a fjord. On the water, surrounded by sheer cliffs, completely immersed in nature. The beauty I was witnessing flooded me with an immense feeling, of what could only be described, as Yugen.
It is these moments of Yugen that more than anything; I wish to share with others just like you.
